About batt & roll insulation
Batt and roll insulation comes in blankets sized to standard framing. Fitted properly, it is a reliable and economical way to insulate open walls, floors and ceilings, and it stays easy to inspect or modify later.
The difference between a batt job that works and one that does not is entirely in the fitting. Compressed corners, gaps behind wiring and blankets forced into a bay they do not fit lose a large share of the rated R-value, so we cut around obstructions rather than through the middle of them.
Where access matters
Batts can be pulled and replaced one bay at a time, which is useful in spaces where wiring or plumbing may be reworked later.

Measure the bays
Framing spacing and cavity depth decide the batt width and thickness. Getting this right is most of the job.

Prepare the cavities
Anything already in the bays is cleared out and obstructions are noted so the batts can be cut around them.
- 03
Cut and fit
Batts are cut to fit fully, split around wiring and pipes, and set so they touch all six sides of the cavity without being compressed.
- 04
Facing and vapour control
Where the assembly calls for it, the facing is oriented correctly and stapled off, or a separate vapour retarder is installed.
- 05
Inspection and cleanup
We walk the bays looking for gaps and compression before the space is closed up, then clear the offcuts and packaging.

FAQ
Questions we get asked
Why does my batt insulation not seem to be working?
Most underperforming batt jobs are fitting problems: blankets compressed into a bay that is too narrow, gaps left behind wiring and pipes, or missing pieces at the top and bottom of the cavity. Air leaks around the batts undo the rest.
Should the paper facing go towards the room or away from it?
In a heating climate like northern Illinois the facing is a vapour retarder and belongs on the warm-in-winter side, meaning towards the living space. We orient it that way as part of the install.
Can you insulate a pole barn or garage with batts?
Yes. Open framing in garages, pole barns and outbuildings is well suited to batts, and we install them in both residential and commercial buildings.
