Replacement is removal and installation run as one job. The old material comes out, the surface is cleaned, and the new insulation goes in the same visit, which is almost always cheaper and less disruptive than booking the two separately.
It is the right call when what is up there has failed rather than simply run thin: decades-old fiberglass that has compressed to half its depth, material that has been wet, or a crawlspace where everything has fallen off the joists.
Changing material
Moving from fallen fiberglass to closed cell foam in a crawlspace, or from thin batts to blown-in across an attic floor, means the old layer comes out first.

Questions we get asked
Is replacing insulation cheaper than removal and installation booked separately?
Usually, yes. Doing both in one visit means one mobilisation, one set of protection and one crew, and the air sealing happens while the surface is already open.
How do I know if my insulation needs replacing rather than topping up?
If it is dry, clean and only thin, it can normally be topped up. If it has been wet, smells, is full of pest damage, or has compressed to a fraction of its original depth, replacement is the honest answer.
Can you replace crawlspace insulation that has fallen down?
Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do. The fallen material comes out, the space is cleaned, and closed cell foam or encapsulation goes in so it does not happen again.
